Alphonse Capone was born January 17, 1899. He was the fourth born son to two new Italian immigrants Gabriele and Teresina Capone. Capone was born in Brooklyn, New York. Al was the first Capone born in the so called "New World". After Capone's father became an American citizen in 1906 all of his children adopted American names. Capone was the fourth oldest of nine children, James, Ralph, Frank, John, Albert John, Matthew Nicholas, Rose and Malfalda. Capone grew up 69 Park Avenue in Brooklyn above his father's barber shop. Most of the people living around Park Avenue were Irish, although Germans, Swedes and Chinese were also in the neighborhood. Al did quite well in school until the sixth grade when his steady record of B's deteriorated rapidly. At fourteen, he lost his temper at the teacher, she hit him and he hit her back. He was expelled and never went to school again. It was around this time when Capone's family moved to a house on Navy Street to 21 Garfield Place. This is the neighborhood where Capone met two of the most influential people of his life, his wife Mae, and gangster Johnny Torrio. Torrio took Capone under his wing and taught him many important lessons about being a mobster. Capone got the nickname Scarface when he was working at the Harvard Inn. Capone walked up to a woman and said something derogatory that made her brother angry. Her brother's name was Frank Galluico. Frank punched Capone. Capone punched back. Frank then pulled out a knife and stabbed Capone three times. One of which left a scar from his left ear to his mouth. Capone was called to Chicago by Johnny Torrio in 1920.
