Al Capone was a Italian mobster in the 1920s in Chicago. He was involved in many crimes such as murder and prohibition. In 1920 Johnny Torrio called Capone over from New York to help him with his crime empire. Capone quickly moved up the mafia ranks. Torrio handed over the crime empire to Capone after they killed Dion O'Banion , an associate who became untrustworthy. Torrio retired two months later after a failed attempt on his life. Six years later, after many other various crimes, the only crime they could get Capone on was tax evasion. Capone was convicted for tax evasion and sentenced to eleven years in federal prison, fined $50,000 and charged $7,692 for court cost, in addition to $215,000. Capone was released after 7 years. He got syphilis and suffered brain damage and insanity from the infection. The year before his death in 1946, Capone's intellect had degraded to that of a 12-year-old's. He died January 25, 1947.
